Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge introduces ‘Machu Picchu by Night’
01 January 2003
Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge introduces ‘Machu Picchu by Night’ If “Location! Location! Location!” are truly some of the key words associated with the success of a hotel, then the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge has definitely got it right! Situated just steps from the entrance to the Ruins of Machu Picchu, this charming, 31-room Lodge is the only property at the top. It is said that the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu was built for a precious few, and guests of the Sanctuary Lodge inherit this privilege – the chance to experience both the unique peace that descends at dusk, and the sense of hovering expectation that fills the air at dawn. These precious hours when most visitors have left belong to the guests of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge.
Now the Lodge has gone one step further, offering guests the possibility of experiencing the Ruins by night. Deep inside one the of the temples of Machu Picchu, lit by the glow of many candles, an explanation of ‘Pago a la Tierra’ takes place. Pago a la Tierra – Payment to Mother Earth - is a ceremony which is performed by inhabitants of the Andes when they feel the need to give thanks, or to ask for special favours from their Gods. The explanation of the ceremony, which would normally be done in Quechua - the traditional language of the Andes, is translated for the benefit of the visitors. It is important to note that the Lodge prefers to avoid trying to replicate something sacred, and thus the service is an explanation in the most respectful way, and not an actual ceremony. The idea is to give guests the opportunity to learn more about Andean legends, in the very heart of the place where perhaps many of the ancient customs and rites were born. On their return to the Lodge, guests find their rooms turned-down and scented with essential oils, aglow with natural wax candles decorated with coca leaves and huayruros beans (an Andean symbol of luck and protection), and fragrant with Andean herbs. - The experience is tailor-made to suit the guests, but would normally start around 18.30.
- Duration: Approximately an hour and a quarter.
- One of the staff escorts the guests and leads the way through the Ruins to the temple.
- Each guest lights his way with a torch.
- Night entrance ticket is included in the price
